The purpose of a stop loss order is to keep you from being "trapped" in a stock that falls a ton of points. It is all done electronically and it is both easy to use and quite mandatory in our opinion.<br/>Many times you will hear ..Know your exit before you go in. On the downside though. For instance there are going to be times when you make a trade and it goes against you. That is normal and it happens to every trader. The difference is that if your trade was fundamentally flawed (you bought a stock thinking it would make a short term run but it fizzled out instead) you should have a set predetermined price that you will let that stock fall to and ..you are out.<br/>For instance lets say we think the XYZ company is going to fly because of a hot news release and we buy 500 shares. but almost instantly the thing starts backing up and soon we are down a couple points. Do you hold or do you sell? Since we were looking for a run up over the news, and it was greeted with selling...it was probably best in this instance to sell out and take our loss and move on to a winning trade. But what if you buy a great company and because of market conditions or whatever..you are faced with your stock falling on you? That is where stop loss orders come in. Let s say we bought into XYZ and XYZ was a great company . We think that it has the ability to go for many points and history shows us that it already has in the past. So we buy it BUT we attach a "stop loss order" to it. What that means is that we are going to tell the broker just exactly how far we are going to let XYZ fall before we sell and take our loss. Let s assume XYZ is selling for 100 dollars a share and we know that it often bounces up and down about 2- 3 points in a normal days range. We might want to tell the brokerage that we would like to sell out at say ..96 dollars per share if it falls that far.<br/>That is a stop loss order and it is attached to your account electronically. They will ask if you want that order good for the day, or good till cancel which simply means do you want the sale to fire off if the stock hits 96 dollars today only, or for the next 60 days (that is about the range of a good til cancel order). Let s say we tell them it s a "GTC". So from the time you bought XYZ , and for the next 60 days or so if XYZ falls to 96 or lower it will trigger your sell program and you will take your loss.<br/>The use of stops on every trade is suggested. The reason is quite simple. If you know the "average" daily range a stock seems to travel in and it falls out of that range...who knows where the bottom might be. A stop loss order will sell you out at a loss for sure, but it will save you from the nightmare of coming home to find your stock got slammed and now you own it but its down 30 points. Now for some things that a stop loss order will not solve.. first if your company announces something bad before the bell and it gaps down 15 points on the open, your order will fire, but it will sell you out at that low. Sometimes in that instance it is better to cancel your stop loss and hope that it rebounds. ( the thinking is like this... the order couldn t save you, so since you have two choices sell it at that low or hold it hoping for some type of nice rebound..often its better to hold it.)<br/>Another problem is that if a company starts to tank real hard your stop may get "run through" or in other words stop loss orders are basically market orders to sell and if the stock is moving down quickly if the order to sell was at 96, it might fall all the way to 94 before you get filled. There always will be a battle between simply holding on to a stock and hoping to recover your losses with time, versus stopping out and taking a quick loss. It probably best to keep pretty tight stops on and take small losses along the way as we trade and gain profits on ones that move for us. One thing not advocated is having a predetermined "sell point" on the upside. For instance if we buy XYZ and it goes up for us 4 points today, sure we could take our profit and go, but instead we simply like to move our stop loss up closer to its new level. This way if it falls back we will get stopped out but we will still have a nice profit, but if it continues up..we will simply keep moving the stop up. There is no limit to how many times you can move a stop loss order and we often will move the point up on an hourly basis if the stock is moving up well.<br/>Let s say XYZ was 100 and we had a 96 dollar stop loss on it. Now XYZ goes to 104 today. We simply move our stop up to say 102. Now if it goes to 106 we in turn go to a stop of 104, etc.. This way we can still capture a lot of upside as it keeps growing.<br/>I know how hard it is to watch a stock get "stopped out" only to rebound a few days later, but sometimes its a long way down before they stop falling. Stops really do work, and after "crunching " the numbers of getting stopped out versus the risks of holding on ...getting stopped out makes more monetary sense as far as having cash to trade with.<br/>Larry Potter is a recognized authority on the subject of trading. Here are some thoughts about bankruptcy that will help you to make that important decision of "Should I, or shouldn t I?"<br/>What Declaring Bankruptcy Means<br/>Declaring bankruptcy is basically an indication that you are not able to pay the debts that you have legally incurred. For this reason, and the legal examination of your bills and the way you handle your finances, as well as the humiliation involved, makes it a rather stressful process. It means that you will have to seek credit counseling, too.<br/>Because so many people are attempting to get out of their debts, for one reason or another, Congress has passed an Act, which was signed by President Bush in 2005, to place certain limitations on declaring bankruptcy and who can do it. This Act, called the "Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act," seeks to make it more difficult to declare bankruptcy and to help the creditor to receive a higher degree of compensation. This Act called for higher bankruptcy filing fees, credit counseling, and making it more difficult to file under Chapter 7, making it necessary for more people to file under Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Many other details are also covered in the Act that place further limitations on bankruptcy.<br/>Two Types of Bankruptcy<br/>Filing under a Chapter 13 bankruptcy means that there is a "reorganization" of your finances, and it does mean that you do repay much of your existing debt. You are required to make a plan that enables you to pay back a lot of your existing debt in the next three to five years. This means the sale of some of your properties (or all of them) in order to satisfy the debt. It is the bankruptcy Trustee who will make the decision as to what needs to be sold - not you.<br/>Filing under a Chapter 7 bankruptcy means, once again, that the various assets that you do currently possess will need to be listed, by requiring you to take a "means test," and then a decision will be made as to what you can keep and what you cannot. Everything will fall under an "exempt" or a "non-exempt clause." You keep the "exempt" items, and lose the rest. The "non-exempt" items will either be sold, or you will be required to pay them back. Some things that are not exempt are child support and education costs.<br/>The cost for declaring bankruptcy can run up to about $1,500 for personal bankruptcy. This includes the filing charges, and the lawyer s fees. The fees, however, are dependent upon how much of an income you have, and it will vary from one state to another. The process of obtaining a legal declaration of bankruptcy, assuming everything is in order, can take up to six months.<br/>After The Declaration Of Bankruptcy<br/>Once you have obtained a legal declaration of bankruptcy, all of your creditors know where they stand. For some, the debts are discharged, and others have received what will be paid to them, or they know what will soon be coming to them. However, it also means that your credit rates have been destroyed, and it will take years to fully repair it. The bankruptcy is placed on your credit rating and will remain there for the next ten years.<br/>What Other Options Are There?<br/>If you are now in a position where you need to consider bankruptcy, then there are some other options that may yet be available to you.<br/>1. Get Credit Counseling<br/>By this, it means work through a debt negotiation company who will take your case to the various creditors in an attempt to work out some kind of a deal. This could be a good step in the right direction because creditors know that if you declare bankruptcy, then they may not get anything. Oftentimes, they will work with you.<br/>2. Renegotiate Your Loans<br/>Once again, by talking with your creditors, you may be able to renegotiate for better loan terms. This could give you a greater leeway financially that could provide just enough of an edge to enable you to get through it with having to declare bankruptcy. In 1946, John Biggins of the National Bank of Brooklyn instigated a Charge-It programme between bank customers and local merchants allowing merchants to deposit sales slips at the bank who then issued an invoice to the customer. In 1949 one New York businessman, Frank McNamara, went to pay his restaurant bill after entertaining clients only to find he had left his wallet in another suit. From this potentially embarrassing situation (his wife was able to cover the bill) he came up with the idea of a Diners Club who issued their first cards to approx 200 customers in the USA who could use their new facility in selected restaurants in New York. However, this was technically a charge card as the customer had to pay the entire amount as soon as billed by Diners Club. In 1959 Bank of America began issuing its own card in California which was the first widely available credit card accepted by a substantial merchant base. At the same time American Express issued their first credit cards for travel and entertainment charges which was accepted at participating restaurants, hotels and airlines.<br/>In 1966 the Bank of America began forming licensing agreements with other banks enabling them to issue credit cards on a widespread basis and was promoted, particularly to traveling salesmen, as a time-saving device rather than a form of credit as instant access to their own banking facilities was difficult when not in their own area. In the same year 14 US banks formed the first banking association named Interlink, with the ability to exchange information on credit card transactions and the following year four Californian banks did the same in order to compete with the BankAmericacard, renamed Visa in 1976, who introduced the MasterCharge programme, renamed MasterCard in 1979. Thereafter banks wishing to issue credit cards joined either the Visa or MasterCard Association whose members shared costs making access to the programme available to smaller financial institutions.<br/>Barclays Bank was the first bank outside the USA to issue its own Barclaycard credit card in 1966 but it wasn t until the magnetic strip was introduced in 1970 that the credit card entered the technological era. Under this system, invented by IBM, a magnetic strip capable of storing data on a band of magnetic material on the reverse of the card is swiped through a magnetic reader. This system proved reasonably effective cutting down on both paperwork and fraud but still had a number of security problems. To solve this banks are replacing this system with the current technology of smartcards or Chip & PIN which contain an embedded microchip and can only be authenticated by using a Personal Identification No (PIN).<br/>In the UK it is common for merchants to refer to their terminals which can read credit cards as PDQ machines. This has arisen as Barclays Merchant Services (BMS), who were one of the first banks to introduce credit card machines in the UK, referred to their terminals as PDQ s and people got to associate the initials PDQ with credit card machines just as vacuum cleaners came to be known as Hoovers after the company who pioneered the vacuum cleaner.<br/>Merchants must apply to a bank for the facility to accept credit cards as a form of payment via a credit card machine or over the internet. Most banks now offer mobile and portable terminals, commonly used by restauranteurs.<br/>Having reached very high usage levels in the USA, UK and Canada, take-up of credit cards was much slower in many other developed countries of the world with many European countries not having anything near the penetration levels of the USA & UK until the mid to late 1990 s. They do it to make the staged setting look as if it s a lived-in room. Pictures and illustrations in decorating books, magazines, and other advertisements are designed to sell a product or an idea.<br/><br/>But what s missing in the staged rooms of most interior design books and magazines? People.<br/><br/>When it comes to decorating your own your home, forget the empty rooms you see in the magazines and books. You should design your rooms as backdrops for the people who use and live in those spaces. In order to best utilize the spaces in your home, try these simple techniques:<br/><br/>Leave empty space. Empty space gives you breathing room and allows the most important items in the room to shine, which are the people!<br/><br/>Use small patterns on walls and furniture. Avoid large-patterned fabrics and wallpapers with designs larger than your head. Huge florals will interfere with the appearance of the people in the room. You don t want to have to compete with bold patterns behind your face. Patterns on sofas and chairs that clash with clothing will also make you and your guests feel uncomfortable.<br/><br/>Use colors that complement people. Finding the right colors to complement your skin and eyes deserves planning. Most people look great when surrounded by color. For light skin colors, use yellows, pinks, and beiges. For darker complexions, yellows, olives, and tans can make people stand out. Since most people no longer have bright white in their eyes, avoid pastels that are whiter than the white in your eyes.<br/><br/>Add textures that feel good to the touch. Support your sense of touch by adding textures that are nice to caress. You don t have to touch velvet to sense its softness, and soft textures like chenille and satins will visually support your feeling of being pampered, as well.<br/><br/>Arrange accessories to shore up emotions. In one of my rooms, I arranged my mantle accessories to make a statement, and it looked great in photographs, but after analyzing why the mantle didn t seem to smile, I realized that it wasn t personal. When I filled it with Mili fiori lamps, crystal candlesticks, and antique vases, the space looked great, but it really began to smile when I added a Mexican Rose rock under the painting.<br/><br/>Think comfort before pretense. Just because a sofa or chair looks fabulous doesn t mean the piece is comfortable. Remember, when you walk around a showroom, sitting down on any piece feels good, but in order to truly test a piece of furniture, you need to sit on it for a long time, until you feel totally rested.
